You know the saying: Everything’s bigger in Texas. And when it comes to the State Fair of Texas, that’s certainly true. The legendary 24-day fair embodies Texas heritage, and attracting over 2 million visitors a year, it’s one of the biggest in America.
But a visit to this Texas tradition doesn’t have to mean big bucks. The State Fair can be an affordable family outing, especially if you plan it right. Here’s your guide to saving money at this year’s fair, from tickets to rides to food.
The best deals on tickets
If you’re looking for the best bang for your buck, skip the weekend crowds and head to the fair on a weekday. Attending during the week provides the best value, especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays when you can score tickets for as low as $10 with special online promotions. Use promo code 23child to unlock the deal. Tip: To purchase these discount tickets, choose a Tuesday or Thursday date for a daily admission ticket (not premium) and click the buy now button. Don’t enter ticket quantities yet. Enter promo code 23child and click the unlock button. A new ticket option should appear in the list called Daily Deals Big Tex Insider that will have the discounted rate.
That’s an incredible bargain considering how much you can do and see. Family-friendly exhibits including a circus, larger-than-life dinosaurs, a rodeo, stunt dog show, concerts and Clydesdales—it’s all free with admission. With over 200 daily activities and shows at the State Fair, you get a lot for those 10 bucks. Plus, children ages 2 and younger are always free.

How to save on food
Eating at the fair can be pricey (after all, those corny dogs can add up quickly) but it doesn’t have to be. Fairgoers are welcome to bring their own coolers and ice chests, and bringing in your own food and drinks (though no alcohol) is a great way to stay on budget. Plus, you won’t feel too guilty if you decide to splurge on a treat. And keep an eye out for value items at the fair, like the 2-coupon bottles of water.
If you really want the fair food experience, come on a Thrifty Thursday. Special food pricing is offered every Thursday when hundreds of State Fair classics like cotton candy and funnel cakes are deeply discounted. And on these days many participating food vendors sell smaller, cheaper portions of other signature menu items.

Savings on rides
Now here’s the real draw for the kids. From the iconic 212-foot Texas Star Ferris wheel to the one-of-a-kind antique Dentzel Carousel, there’s a ride at the State Fair for everyone. If you’re bringing little ones, you’ll want to head to the Kidway area, which caters to the youngest fairgoers and features rides suitable for children as young as 2.
State Fair Food and Midway Coupons are used to pay for Midway rides and games. You can purchase these coupons at booths located throughout the fairgrounds, or in advance online. And if you have left over from a State Fair, be sure to bring them along—they’re valid any year you visit.
For the best deal (and the most rides), you’ll want to come on a Tuesday for Discount Midway Ride Day. You’ll score midway rides for just four coupons and kiddie rides for only three coupons (Texas Star Ferris Wheel and Thrillway excluded).
