Danger Zone: Generic Pills?

When faced with higher prescription prices, some women turn to generic drugs, particularly when it comes to birth control (a monthly expense that can add up, depending on your insurance coverage). Generic pills might cut costs, but do they also cut corners on quality? And, could this pose a greater risk to your health?

Sheila Chhutani, OB/GYN at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, says most women respond well to generic prescription birth control. “It’s a widespread myth that generic birth control doesn’t offer the same effectiveness as non-generic pills,” she says.

However, she points out that some women might react differently to lower-quality ingredients used in the binding and filling of generic pills (including prescriptions other than birth control). “These agents can cause different absorption of the hormone, which sometimes causes allergic reactions or more noticeable side effects like spotting,” Chhutani explains. The bottom line, she says: “Talk to your physician if you notice any unwanted side effects. It’s one thing to save money, but the most important factor in all of this is your health and well-being.”
