Quit avoiding heart-healthy cardio with excuses like “my back hurts” or “I’ve got bad knees.” A new walking and running program targets core strength and joint stress, alleviating aches and pains experienced when exercising. Based on the principles of yoga, Pilates and tai chi, ChiRunning and ChiWalking programs “[work] with core muscles and [focus] on long-term performance and well-being,” according to ChiRunning.com. This combination helps to soothe knees and rebuild core strength lost during childbirth.

Participants join certified instructor Edward Paramo once a month for instruction on alignment and relaxation of the body. The group learns strategic strength-training moves that promote injury-free exercising. Enthusiasts then return home, where their new knowledge “changes running from a fitness sport to a holistic practice similar to yoga or Pilates,” Paramo says. Participants continue their practice on their own, checking in with Paramo for monthly group exercise events (at varying times and places in the Dallas area; call Paramo for details, 214/637-1549).
