Tastes Like Deutschland

Not your usual salad and sandwich spot, Kuby’s offers something different for the lunch crowd. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, this Dallas institution was built on tradition and taste, offering the best in German cuisine.

Located in the trendy Snider Plaza, Kuby’s delivers both schnitzel and socializing. You may have to circle for a parking spot, but, once inside, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to an old German diner. You enter through their legendary deli where European breads and pastries are made fresh daily. And you can’t miss their house-crafted sausages, selection of cheeses or freshly sliced meats. Browse the shelves and you’ll see a wide variety of German food items for cooking and eating. Mutzenmandeln (German fried cookies) anyone? It’s like going on a field trip!

Kuby’s has a seat-yourself policy that can get tricky with the crowds that fill up this popular destination. There are only a few select tables that you can put a stroller next to, but there are booths along the wall and even bar seating if your little one wants to swirl around on a stool. Once you’ve found your seat you’ll be given a basket of yummy bread and pretzels for hungry little mouths. The menu gives you a quick language lesson; Suppe and Salate (soup or salad) or how about a Belegte (sandwich)? You can choose from pastrami, the Kuby club, sausage or schnitzel (pork or chicken) that come with your choice of hot German potato salad, fries or potato pancakes. A popular lunch item is the Wurst Teller with homemade sauerkraut, hot German potato salad, red cabbage and your choice of meat. Your little one may not feel like expanding his palate so there is a Kinderteller (translation: Children’s portion for 12 and under) that offers grilled cheese, nuggets or wienerwurst and comes with fries, fruit and a cookie for only $3.95. (How do you say happy meal in German?) Be prepared for service to run a little slow, but the food arrives hot and tasty. After your first bite you get a sense that the taste and flavors at Kuby’s have remained the same for the last 50 years when Karl Sr. first opened the doors. If you’re looking for an authentic dining experience, Kuby’s won’t disappoint.
