Didn’t anyone ever tell you to eat the rainbow? Sure, that’s great advice, but when you’re looking to improve your child’s health, you need something a bit more practical. Dallas nutritionist Laura May-Roelse, MA, RD, LD, says that when it comes to nutrition, “It’s about being creative.” Check out these tips for getting your kids to eat a variety of wholesome foods:
Fruits: Make dessert healthier by whipping up a batch of brownies … but substitute homemade applesauce for the oil. The kids will never know the difference!
Veggies: Mac ’n’ cheese doesn’t have to be off limits. Serve up this kid favorite with chopped broccoli.
Whole Grains: Go ahead—give them their favorite breakfast. But when you do decide to serve pancakes with chocolate chips, mix in some whole grain oats so their calorie consumption is packed with more solid nutrients.
Small changes, says May-Roelse, can improve your child’s mood and concentration instantly. So be a little sneaky—your kiddo may not know it, but someday he’ll thank you.
