Reader Rewards

Books nourish young minds. But, books can be expensive—especially when your child can consume three to four books in one sitting! Not all families can afford to keep their children’s bookshelves stocked, so Half Price Books, a national bookseller based in Dallas, decided to do something. And the impact is staggering.

In just 10 years, the “Half Pint Library” program has collected and donated more than two million books to underprivileged children in the United States. Here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the program collected more than 10,000 books just last year. The book drive, which spans through February and March every year, ends just in time for the store’s big celebration: the book giveaway.

Donated books don’t just go to families in the area (via literacy programs), they go to area hospitals, shelters and libraries in need. This year, the company aims to top last year’s donation; the group will celebrate April 1 with a Giveaway Day at the flagship store located in Dallas on Northwest Highway just east of I-75.

But, there are plenty of ways to contribute to area kids throughout the year. Half Price Books also operates a “Donation Storefront,” where nonprofits and educational organizations can shop for overstocked books that the store sets aside. This special section is open only on Saturdays at the flagship store, but interested patrons can donate books for this cause at any area location (simply tell the store clerk you wish to contribute to the Donation Storefront).
