Party venue Pump It Up is forging the path toward sensory entertainment. Thanks to their new Sensory Jump Time program, which debuted in April, children with autism can now head to the inflatable playground haven and play games or hop to their hearts’ content in a fun environment designed just for them. Though individual Pump It Up locations may have had events for those with special needs in the past, this is the first nationally implemented program dedicated to those with autism. The program is complete with games that encourage motor skills, yet downplay competition and stringent rules. Additionally, trained staff that recognizes the needs of children with autism will be on-site. During the dedicated play period, there will be no use of music, glow lights, whistles, wristbands or other elements that might be bothersome to children on the spectrum. According to Pump it Up CEO Lee Knowlton, “We see the launch of the Sensory Jump Time program as a small but important step towards a more autism-friendly society.” One small step for man, one bouncy leap toward a sensory-sensitive culture.
