Many working moms face more than just the challenges of finding childcare and getting those mashed-up Cheerios out of their best suit jacket—they also struggle to connect with other moms who can get together for playdates after working hours. Enter Vera Wang, founder of Plano Working Moms and an information analyst at Irving-based company Targetbase.
“I had a hard time finding groups for working moms,” she says. “All the moms groups are for stay-at-home moms and weren’t tailored for moms who work and only have the weeknights and weekend available.”
So Wang, mom of 5-year-old Alan and 2-year-old Calyssa, started her own group in September 2008, and it now boasts more than 80 members. Wang maintains a Web page through social-networking site Meetup.com and also keeps a Facebook page chock full of local activities and mom-centered articles for group members.
"We do a Collin Creek Mall (in Plano) meetup once a month for older kids and a Shops at Willow Bend meetup for babies ages birth to 18 months old. The other events are impromptu, mainly on weekday nights and weekends. We go on field trips to Watters Creek in Allen or the Dallas Zoo. Moms can check out our Web site for details on our events.
"Anyone can join—just go to our Web site or search for us on Facebook! There are no fees to join.
"My favorite part about being involved with the group is that I get to do fun things with my kids and meet friends with similar background. I’m so blessed that I’ve gotten to meet and get to know so many friends through Plano Working Moms. The children are getting along really well. They are definitely forging friendships!”
