Kiddie Litter

It seems like something anyone could do—pick up trash. But how many of us actually put the gloves to work?

Grapevine resident Lynde McCoy and her family did just that. After hearing about SLANT45, McCoy recruited her husband and her sons, Keith, 11, and Hunter, 9, to find a way to give back to their community. It didn’t take a large-scale project. And they didn’t have to look far. Simply taking a stroll around Lake Grapevine and noting the grocery bags, Gatorade bottles and other debris strewn about was enough to motivate them.

“We’re doing this so we can enjoy the lake and so everyone else can enjoy it safely … without looking at your feet the whole time, worrying about stepping on glass,” says McCoy. She calls this a low-cost, high-willingness project and says her boys are learning that, even though they’re just kids—they have power. “I wanted them to pay attention to things outside of their world,” she adds.

The big question for the boys at the end of it all? “Are we just gonna do it one time?”
