Hoffbrau Steaks

What’s the fastest way to a man’s heart? If you’re getting there by way of his stomach, your most reliable choice comes in several varieties: sirloin, T-bone, filet, rib-eye …

A quality steak may not always be easy to come by, but don’t assume you’ve got to dine at a white tablecloth (no crumbs allowed!) or forgo this month’s manicure to pay for it.

At Hoffbrau Steaks, you can have your meat … and eat your Brau chips too. And it’s all served with a heaping helping of Texas hospitality. The concept is simple: “It’s family, comfort, casual, fun …” says co-owner Rainey Fogiel. “Make a mess—we won’t care.” Too good to be true? The Hoffbrau franchise (there are five North Texas locations, all run by the Fogiel family) is modeled after the hofbräus of the Texas Hill Country in the mid-19th century.

One thing they’ll tell you here is that “the rib-eyes of Texas are upon you.” As clever as it is, it would be more accurate to say your eyes will be on your rib-eye … if it even lasts very long. You can also savor the signature peppered smoked sirloin: hickory-smoked, pepper-crusted aged sirloin topped with lemon butter sauce. All steaks are served with soup or salad and a side, along with a buttery roll.

Upon arrival, little cowboys and cowgirls will be handed an activity sheet and crayons. Menu items include chicken strips, mac ’n’ cheese, grilled cheese, hamburger, cheeseburger and a corn dog, all served with fries or steamed broccoli, a drink and a Blue Bell Push-Up. Keep them entertained all night by cheering on the Rangers from one of the many TVs, or playing “I Spy” with license plates on the wall. Coming with a big group or birthday party? Choose from one of the group menus, each offering a variety of items at a set price.

But there’s more to feel good about than just a good cut of meat at a good price. “We really believe in giving back,” says Fogiel, referring to the numerous philanthropic projects the restaurant has taken on. Hoffbrau has donated food and supplies to Dallas LIFE homeless shelter. Currently the restaurant is raising money for the Mesquite Charter Academy. When you stop by, purchase some candy and a to-go mug—the money will be used to buy gym equipment for the school. Now, that’s something worth digging your fork into!
