Fall … Fabulous Fall

This fashion season is all about variety.

Design houses have pulled together collections that address every figure type, age and trend. Everything is in style, meaning all your old favorites are back. Vintage glamour is the new black – as long as you know how to pull it off (hint: it’s easy). Mix-and-match the trends or choose one new special piece to update a classic. And, say good-bye to dreary; you’ll be donning royal hues in blue, purple and green, as well as dumping last season’s gray for shitake brown.

The color palate is ’80s inspired, but that doesn’t mean reviving Boy George. It’s more about breathing new life into your wardrobe with a vibrant brushstroke – think ultra orange tights married to a mod short bootie.

In the same vein, forget that matching suit and opt for separates. This type of ensemble screams femininity with a retro echo. One of my favorite looks is a long jacket worn over a chiffon print dress as shown by Diane von Furstenberg. Skirts are long and lean, topped with a bowed blouse and boots (very Edwardian) or long and softly gathered, paired with a fitted, funnel-neck sweater and cinched at the waist (think Mary Tyler Moore ’70s).

Plaid explodes on the fashion scene for fall – watch for ladylike suiting or tomboy chic. Caution: A little bit of plaid goes a long way; limit yourself to a piece or two, such as a skirt or jacket to serve as a backdrop to your current crop of solid color classics.

Rocker chic resurfaces and it’s sophisticated and edgy. What could be easier than wearing all black? Layer loads of gold chains over your black turtleneck. Pair it with a skinny leg, black wash jean, pant or black pencil skirt and don’t forget the final touch: a short black bootie. You can soften this look by donning one of the new bowed or ruffled white blouses as a foil to your black pants.

After a summer of tooling around in flip-flops, get ready for unthinkably high stiletto platform shoes, hidden platform short booties and, thank goodness, tall boots with flat heels.

Jewelry is big, bold and statement making. Bangles in all types of materials abound. The biggest news: You’ll be wearing faux-jeweled collars and matching cuffs.

And, feathers are everywhere! Spotted on headbands, handbags, jewelry and sweaters, this refreshing accessory will add a dash of whimsy to your outfits.

Finally, make sure your handbag is oversized, vintage-inspired or dangling on a chain, and you are good to go!
