The Ultimate Hideout in Big Bend

Whether you choose to brave the highway for the nine-hour drive or hop a jet to the newly opened Lajitas private international airport, a trip to west Texas’ Lajitas “The Ultimate Hideout” Resort is worth the travel. This adventurous, family-friendly hideaway is located in between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend State Park – in the very acreage where Comanche Indians roamed, and where Pancho Villa led his men across the Rio Grande.

The infamous West Texas characters, numerous activities and rugged mountain-desert terrain will keep the kids entertained, while mom and dad bask in the luxury of this destination resort. From the expected resort necessities (a gigantic pool and lounging area; fine dining; golf; and enough shopping to keep American Express on alert) to the Lajitas necessities (stables; a hunt club; guided hiking; rafting; and – my personal favorite – Jeep tours), there is something to do for everyone in the family.

For the kiddos: Kids will love to go beyond the Wild West history and dig into the remnants of the past on a guided marine fossil tour that explores part of the Lajitas acreage that used to be a vast ocean. The tour is great for kids who are fascinated by dinosaurs. After the hands-on tour, kids can cool off in the Lajitas pool or join one of the resort’s chefs for kid-friendly culinary classes.

For moms and dads: After mom is whisked away to the Agavita Spa (where she will enjoy skin treatments that offer the benefits of nourishing desert plants and other native extracts) or to a pool-side reading retreat, Dad can either head to the golf course or call upon the cowboy within – Lajitas offers seasonal hunting tours, as well as cowboy action and skeet shooting. Chaps and a ten-gallon are provided.

For the whole family: Bring the whole family together on a guided Jeep tour of the surrounding area. This all-day excursion will provide breathtaking views in Big Bend National Park, as well as cultivate your kids’ imagination while viewing old ruins and unique geological formations. The trip includes lunch and plenty of bumps along the Jeep-worthy dirt roads.
