San Diego for Families

Feel like making a break for the coast? Now that school is out, maybe it’s time to show the kids the Pacific Ocean and let them dip their toes into its chilly surf. Arguably (but pretty likely) the most family-friendly city in California, San Diego beckons with museums, attractions, beaches and a rich maritime history.

This month, San Diego celebrates the opening of its new children’s museum building in the heart of downtown’s marina district. The new facility is the city’s first public “green” project, offering 50,000 square feet of state-of-the-art and hands-on environmental and arts exhibits.

When you’re ready for more local flavor after a day at the San Diego Zoo, Sea World or LEGOLAND in nearby Carlsbad, explore the naval town's nautical history at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. You'll be just in time for the 2008 Sea Chantey Fest, May 18, a celebration of sailing and song on board the Star of India, a 19th century cargo vessel with a storied history of passages to India and beyond.

And, stay tuned for the breathtaking Festival of Sail in August, where you'll see more than 20 historic tall ships from around the world put on a truly international festival experience.
