Tips for Vacationing With (or Without) Kids

Who’s calling the shots for your child in an emergency when you are on the road? Maybe you travel for business (or that much needed getaway) and rely on family or a sitter for childcare. Perhaps your child is headed off to a sports competition or a school trip, or maybe your ex is taking the kids on a vacation out of the country. Savvy parents prep for travel – no matter who is traveling, parent or child – by filling out medical authorizations, insurance information and custodial authority forms.

Kenneth G. Raggio, a Dallas family law specialist, recommends the following tactics for optimum peace of mind:
Keep a complete list of contact information at your home for caretakers, including names and phone numbers of doctors, neighbors and nearby relatives, as well as a list of bedtimes, medications, allergies, etc.

For overnight caretakers, add information about keys, garage remotes and security systems. Include a permission slip, stating that the caretaker can present the child to any licensed dentist, physician or hospital for emergency care.

If your child is traveling away from home with another adult, create a specific letter of permission identifying the caretaker, as well as dates and places of travel.

Airlines may require additional documentation. And, for international travel, plan on having your permission letter notarized – be specific about dates and places of travel.

If there has been a divorce decree, a new court order that retains jurisdiction over the child may be necessary.
