Doing away with the drab colors of winter, spring blows in brighter colors and prints. We think polka dots are among the happiest trends to be seen this upcoming season. And we’re not talking about childhood days with spotted ribbons in your hair, because these aren’t your mamma’s polka dots. The new wave of decadent dots are sophisticated and more artsy, with designers like DKNY, Michael Kors and small independent labels sprinkling them in their spring 2009 collections.
If you cringe at the thought of wearing a flouncy feminine dress with petite polka dots freckling it, not to fret, there are other (and much better) options. Use a polka dot scarf from Banana Republic to accent a solid top or dress. To make the dots truly stand out, make sure it’s the only print you’re wearing. Keeping everything else solid will highlight the trendy accessory, without going overboard.
Not much for scarves? Try Michael Kors’ Malibu Dot Skirt (shown at left). There are no dainty dots in sight with this calf-length skirt. The bigger the dot, the better for this skirt, as it’s a powerful statement compared to the traditionally demure patterns of years past.
DKNY is a big proponent of the polka dots, sporting a cardigan, dress and scarf all with the dotted design. No matter your feelings about the tiny circles in the past, this season they’re given a new life as a bold accent.
