When advice about “staying fit” and “being healthy” comes from higher ups, it’s easy to ignore. But what about if kids are sending the message?
This fall, students at Coppell’s Valley Ranch Elementary School became the teachers when they hosted a health and wellness fair in connection with SLANT45. According to Principal Cynthia Arterbery, each grade took on a different project, presenting a booth. Topics included dental hygiene, healthful eating, physical fitness, bicycle safety and germ awareness. “The fourth graders taught [the community] about physical fitness,” says Arterbery, adding that they offered hands-on exercise routines that “tied in with their curriculum.”
Teacher Jennifer Torres shares the students’ enthusiasm: “They’re really pumped about sharing their expertise with the community.”
