Today’s it-question isn’t “Who are you wearing?” – it’s “What are you eating?”
We should know the answer. After all, the Michael Pollans, Jamie Olivers and Michelle Obamas of the world (not to mention co-op-loving neighbors) give us ever more evidence on the importance of knowing the origins of our food. Initiatives such as Chefs Move to Schools support the positive impact on our children of moving away from the labels and toward a diet of whole foods grown, and products made, locally. So why hasn’t everyone made the change?
As brilliant as those personalities and well-meaning friends are, they might fail to mention that they went through a learning curve on their way to becoming locavores. There’s no instant download button from which we instantly gain all of the info we need to get label-free and healthy. But here’s a quick guide to local DFW businesses, farms, markets, CSAs (community-supported agriculture programs), and, yes, produce/grocery delivery services. It’s by no means exhaustive, but it’s a fine start for cultivating new relationships with your food – and those who sell it.*
