The Unicorn’s Birthday: A Magical, Sensory-Friendly Symphony Adventure for Families

FWSO presents this fun, accessible experience designed especially for sensory-sensitive families

A truly fun, sensory-friendly way for kids to experience a live orchestra might sound as rare as a unicorn but The Unicorn’s Birthday, presented by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, makes it wonderfully real.

This 45-minute musical adventure—composed by Grammy-nominated Bob Singleton, whose full-orchestra work was created especially for audiences with special needs—invites children into a whimsical world of friendly animals, playful sound effects and a delightful birthday celebration starring one very beloved Unicorn.

Designed especially for little listeners, this inclusive performance gives kids a rare and totally low-pressure chance to enjoy a live orchestra, Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 11am. The atmosphere is relaxed and judgment-free, so families can breathe a little easier. With gentle lighting, colorful visuals, and thoughtful supports for neurodiverse children and those with sensory sensitivities, The Unicorn’s Birthday transforms the concert hall into a truly welcoming space where every child can wiggle, move, imagine and soak up the joy of music in whatever way feels right for them.

A Whimsical Story Comes to Life Through Music

From the very first notes, kids are swept into a charming musical world where penguins waddle across the stage, monkeys chatter in rhythm and ducks quack along with the orchestra. Every animal friend brings a new sound, a new scene and a new burst of laughter to the story.

But this isn’t a traditional “sit still and stay quiet” type of performance. The narration is playful, the visuals are bright, and the music is full of humor and heart. It all builds toward one very important moment: celebrating the Unicorn’s big birthday in a world full of imagination and joy—a moment guaranteed to delight any child who’s ever wished unicorns were real.

The Unicorn’s Birthday Is Perfect for Kids Experiencing Live Orchestra for the First Time

If, like many parents, you want to introduce your children to symphonic music but worry the traditional concert environment may feel intimidating or overstimulating, The Unicorn’s Birthday solves that beautifully.

This performance gives families a stress-free way to experience the symphony together. Kids get to see musicians up close, hear the unique sounds of orchestral instruments and discover how music creates emotion, scene changes, and character voices—all without the pressure of formal concert etiquette.

For many families, it becomes a child’s first positive, confidence-building introduction to live classical music.

Designed with Sensory Sensitivities in Mind

One of the most special aspects of The Unicorn’s Birthday is its strong commitment to accessibility and inclusion. Families with sensory-sensitive or neurodiverse children will find that accommodations are thoughtfully built into the entire experience.

Soft lighting and comfortable volume levels make it easier for kids to settle in. Flexible seating and freedom to move mean you won’t have to worry about disrupting anyone—wiggles, noises, pacing, flapping and stimming are completely welcome here.

Sensory bags from KultureCity are also available, complete with fidget tools and noise-canceling headphones. And if your kiddo needs a break, there’s a designated quiet area for decompression at any time.

Relaxed rules allow families to bring dry snacks, blankets, tablets or iPads, personal fidgets, or headphones—whatever helps your child feel comfortable. And before the show, pre-concert activities welcome families to interact with an instrument petting zoo and learn about the music at our concert themed coloring station, easing anxiety and building excitement.

It all adds up to an environment where families who may typically avoid live performances can finally say: “This feels welcoming. We belong here.”

The Unicorn’s Birthday Is A Family Experience for Everyone

Whether your child is imaginative and energetic, sensory-seeking, or easily overwhelmed, The Unicorn’s Birthday embraces them exactly as they are. For regular concert-going families, it’s refreshingly kid-centered. And for first timers, it’s a gentle, joyful bridge into a world they might never have thought possible.
