The Anatomy of a Cool Mom

Kristie Ramirez, editor-at-large for FD Luxe and a writer-at-large for Texas Monthly, is mom to Cruz, 6, and Pilar, 3. Despite the career-and-kids juggling act, she finds time to cultivate fashion and fun—and never leaves home without two pairs of shoes.

What’s your secret to looking so trendy? Matthew Taylor at Orange cuts my hair. He’s done it for the past six years, and used to blow it out all the time, but now I just wake up in the morning and let it go.

And your nails? For a mani/pedi I go to Kathy at City Nails in Lakewood.

Any summer beauty staples? I need my Brazilian blowout from Renee (at Orange Salon) and eyebrow waxes from Amy Talanca at Halcyon.

You’re stranded on a desert island—what are your must-haves? I cannot live without Latisse, Sunday Riley Juno Transformative Lipid Serum, and lip balm.

Where do you like to shop for yourself? My favorite places are Target, Forty Five Ten and V.O.D. I always end up buying the same thing—crazy, super-high heels, gray shirts, jeans, black blazers. I always carry a pair of heels and always have my Vans.

And for your kids? For them, it’s a mix of Target and Crewcuts—I go to Crewcuts for something special—and Zara, up at the Galleria.

Where do you go for a relaxing dinner? Everywhere—there’s no “that’s an adult restaurant” unless it’s a date night for my husband and me, but we especially love Alberto Lombardi’s restaurants. He creates environments that are kid-friendly—all of his restaurants are that way. We eat at Cibus a lot, so the kids can run around and we can eat in the outdoor area.

And to hang out? On weekends, it’s everywhere from one of the parks at White Rock Lake to a soccer field. And we’re at home a lot. We’d rather be in bed watching America’s Funniest Home Videos on Friday night than anywhere else. I know my kids like me, if that’s any kind of barometer of being a cool mom. I find them endlessly fascinating.

Sunday morning routine? Sunday mornings we have Joni, Jackson or Steely on the stereo; pancakes and lattes are being made; the kids are running around; and the New York Times is strewn about. It’s probably my favorite day at our house.

To stay cultured: Where do you go, what do you do? We make it to the Winspear for various dances, concerts and lectures, The Dallas Contemporary for progressive exhibitions, and the kids love heading to the Nasher and the DMA.
