We recently had a chat with Miss Destinee Duncan, a 10-year-old fashion guru from McKinney. She’s the creator of a high-fashion clothing line called Glossy Girls that has been featured in several runway shows including the annual Runways & Marketplace at this year’s Austin Fashion Week. When she’s not sketching or attending shows, Destinee is busy being a normal kid, listening to hip-hop and playing with her friends. Read on to see why we adore this ambitious little lady.
When and how did you get started in fashion? I’ve been sketching since I was 5. When I was 8 I had my seamstress start making my sketches.
Where do you get your design inspiration? Kimora Lee Simmons.
Do you read magazines? I like to look at them but I don’t know specifically what they’re called.
What do you want to be when you grow up? A fashion designer and an actress.
Favorite movie? I have so many! It would have to be The Cheetah Girls.
Where is your favorite place to shop? Abercrombie.
Describe your personal style. A shirt, jeans and tennis shoes.
What is your least favorite thing to see people wear? Turtlenecks.
How do you feel about high heels? I like to wear them with all my dresses and skirts. My mom says they can’t be high. But I like medium-sized ones.
What’s your favorite season? Spring, because I like the colors and the clothes.
Favorite singer or band? One Direction and Usher
Where do you dream of visiting? Disney World or Paris
If you could be any animal, what would it be? A cheetah, because when I go to middle school I want to run track and cheetahs are really fast. And I like cheetah print.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in life? Take risks.
What is your advice to other kids who want to start a business? It doesn’t matter how old you are — just keep on following your dreams and never give up.
