In a light-hearted tale, Gina Gallagher and Patricia Konjian, authors and parents of children with disabilities, make no claim that they’re experts on parenting children with special needs, nor do they boast that their children are perfect – and that’s the point. Their funny and frank book, Shut Up About Your Perfect Kid: A Survival Guide for Ordinary Parents of Special Children, touches on topics such as dealing with people who say or do hurtful things to you or your child, how to battle your own grief and finding a support group. There are also helpful resources that give you the answers to questions you either think you should know the answer to or are afraid to ask. They make difficult material easier with their “street translation” of medical and therapy terms that seem like they’re from a different language.
