As the weather begins to cool down, let the kids take a break from their usual winter exercise activities by trying out a different sport. Why not have a go at squash? During this fast-paced game, players must take turns hitting the ball against the wall with a long, narrow racquet while staying inside the boundaries of the cube-shaped court. Since the ball doesn’t bounce as much as in racquetball, it’s necessary to think, react and move very quickly. “It’s a wonderful sport. It has grown incredibly, and in the last couple of years people have taken an interest in the sport for their kids,” says Thelma Van Eck, a squash coach/instructor in the Dallas area.
Options for playing the sport include attending programs at Life Time Fitness in Allen and in Plano. Private lessons instructed by Barberis generally start at $100 for five sessions. To find out more, call 469/422-7077 or visit mckinneyracquetclub.com.
Options for playing include attending a free clinic at the YMCA in downtown Dallas. Clinics are offered by the Dallas Squash Recreation Association and are open to all ages. Private lessons taught by Thelma Van Eck generally start at $40 for a 45-minute session. To find out more information, call 214/207-7401 or visit dallassquash.org.
