New Mom: Heather Hawkins

Brides. Grooms. Baby? As one of Dallas' most sought-after wedding photographers, Heather Hawkins is a master at capturing once-in-a-lifetime moments. As a first-time mom, though, Hawkins laughingly confides that her picture-perfect lifestyle with attorney husband Adam has given way to something greater.

Was parenthood in the family plan?
This was a total surprise blessing. I never would have believed it if you told me how life-changing 2013 would be for us. There were so many moments that make me want to cry with happiness. It was obviously all part of God's plan.

From photographer to parenting newcomer, tell me about the moment that screamed, “You’re a mom!”
The wake-up call had to be the moment Finn [now 4 months old] was placed on me after delivery. I've never felt so humbled and alive than I did in that moment. Holding him for the first time was better than every good feeling I’d ever felt, tenfold.

Have you changed as a woman since Finn arrived?
[Laughs.] Um, yeah, I’ve grown up a lot. A ton. Finn's birth was the most pivotal moment of my life, and it's been a fascinating shift from twentysomething girl throwing dinner parties in Brooklyn to twentysomething mom covered in baby pee and spit-up. I’ve learned how to really nurture and become selfless – that switch was flipped instantly.

What about your husband? How’s he handling daddyhood?
I definitely see Adam in a new light. It’s surprised me how confident and calm he’s been in the face of such new and unknown territory. And also that he knows all the lyrics to “Baby Beluga” [a song by Raffi].

As a photographer, do you think you take more photos than other first-time moms?
[Laughs.] I have a separate hard drive for all of Finn’s pictures. I started a blog called Dallas Littles Club [dallaslittlesclub.com], because I wanted to document my son each week and include friends who were also professional photographers. I love that it forces us into thinking more creatively about our children and gives us intentional time with them as well. I can't wait to have 52 glimpses into Finn’s world at the end of the year as he grows from a baby into a little boy.

So does this mean you’ll be snapping kids professionally sometime soon?
I love seeing my wedding clients grow their families, but I'll leave newborn photography to the experts [smiling].

Speaking of work …
Right now is my off-season, so I just get to be with Finn.

Are you nervous about balancing baby and bride?
My husband’s job is pretty flexible. And both of our moms are first-time grandmas, and they both live in the DFW area. They’re in love with the baby and help out a ton. Once things get busy, I’ll have to learn balance as I go.

And how’s the married part of life?
My marriage is a lot stronger since Finn was born. Adam and I have definitely grown as a couple. And it’s cool being a family of three.

Best part of your day …
Morning. All three of us are at home together, and we have a big breakfast. Finn’s awake and he’s so smiley and happy. Oh, and bath time.

Any last words?
I never really knew how amazing mothers were until I became one. I'm constantly surprised how one can function on such little sleep.
