The holidays are quite literally, right around the corner. To celebrate this festive time of year, we asked local moms to share their favorite holiday traditions with their families. From driving around to see all the colorful Christmas lights to ornament picking, find a little inspiration from these mamas to add or create new holiday traditions with your family.
“One of my favorite holiday traditions with my son is getting together with my sister, her boys and my mom on the weekend to make and decorate Christmas cookies. My son loves it because he gets to see his aunt, cousins and grandma, but most importantly, he loves all the frosting and sprinkles to decorate the cookies with and of course, eating his creations!” — Ashley, Dallas
“My kids get to pick out the wrapping paper Santa will use to wrap their gifts. The story is Santa and his elves are so busy with making presents they don’t have time to look for wrapping paper. So that’s why we have to help him. They love it!” — Courtney, The Colony
“When my daughter Jensen was wee [little], my husband and I buckled her in the back seat, filled a thermos with cocoa, and drove around Highland Park to look at the Christmas lights. Most of the time she fell asleep. Time has passed and I no longer have a husband and she now does––but around Dec. 21 or 22, we still bundle into the car, head for Starbucks for holiday lattes instead of cocoa, and drive around HP looking at the displays, listening to Mannheim Steamroller and Vince Guaraldi’s “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” — Judy, Wylie
“Our favorite family tradition is to make popcorn and hot cocoa and take the kids around nearby neighborhoods to look at all the Christmas lights. We also open our presents on Christmas day, stay in our pajamas and make brunch together. We live in Dallas and all our family is back in South Africa, so we try and make Christmas as fun as we can for our three kiddos.” — Germaine, Dallas
“My kid’s favorite tradition is going to see Christmas Lights (it was mine as a kid, too!) in the surrounding area. We load up the car with hot chocolate in our pajamas and enjoy the city’s holiday lights!” — Maryland, Heartland
“We have a tradition of Deer Fritters and homemade tamales on Christmas Eve. We all get together for the frying of the fritters, eat, sing and dance on Christmas day together.” — Leigh, Arlington
“One of our family traditions is to take the kids to the mall and have them each pick an ornament that represents something important to them from the year. [It could represent] a new sport, a new pet, a great grade, a new hobby, a new friend, etc. It gives the kids an opportunity to reflect on the whole year and realize that we have so much to be thankful for.” — Linda, Grand Prairie
