The mommy makeover has become one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the past 10 years as it allows the surgeon to address several problem areas at once.
Because time is so valuable, any procedure that can, for instance, improve the appearance of the breasts, abdomen, or buttocks, at once is great news for the patient.
Dr. Raja Mohan, a board-certified plastic surgeon with a thriving practice in Irving, Texas, performs many mommy makeovers each year. He spoke with us recently about some important considerations and trends regarding this procedure.
Mommy Makeovers Aren’t One-Size-Fits-All
“A mommy makeover looks different for each patient, and there are limits to what the procedure can accomplish,” Dr. Raj says.
A mommy makeover is something that your surgeon needs to customize according to your lifestyle, anatomy, and needs.
Most often, women are interested in a mommy makeover for one or more of these reasons he notes:
- Weight loss or gain
Each of these, he adds, “can take a heavy toll on a woman’s contours. For instance, the skin on your abdomen can stretch beyond its ability to bounce back, leaving you with droopy sagging skin in that area.”
Many women also lose volume in the breasts and develop fat in the abdomen that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise.
Dr. Raj says that the key to a successful mommy makeover is choosing the right timing and procedures to address your problem areas.
Breast and Belly Procedures Are Most Popular
In the surgeon’s practice, women usually choose procedures in their makeover that include the breasts and abdomen. So, breast augmentation, breast lifts, and liposuction are some of his most popular procedures.
“The goal of a mommy makeover is to provide a more youthful and lifted look to your contours. In my surgeries, this may involve removing extra skin and excess fat, and increasing breast volume with implants or even fat grafting.”
Some of the other popular mommy makeover procedures include:
- Buttock augmentation
- Arm lift
- Thigh lift
- Breast reduction
- Botox (for the face)
Breast Augmentation Or Breast Lift?
Many women come to Dr. Raj wanting to ‘do something’ about their breasts after pregnancy or weight loss. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can especially cause the breasts to sag and deflate.
He says that modern breast implants are safer and more natural-looking than ever, and are a terrific way to restore lost volume.
However, breastfeeding and age also can stretch the skin and tissue in the breasts. That’s why a breast augmentation alone might not always suffice.
Dr. Raj tells us that women can usually tell if they need a breast lift in addition to a breast augmentation by looking at themselves in the mirror. If the nipples still face forward, you may only need implants, but if not, a breast lift could be just what you need.
If your surgeon uses a bigger implant to address droopy skin, it usually causes complications in a few years.
“Drooping, loose breast skin indicates there is weak tissue that won’t hold the implant in place over time,” he says. “That’s why I recommend a breast lift for these patients, which will restore the nipple to the center of the breast, given a perkier, more youthful look.”
The belly is a problem area for many women after pregnancy, Dr. Raj points out. Liposuction is ideal for removing extra fat, but it won’t do anything for droopy abdominal skin or loose muscles. Both problems are common for those who have had children or gained or lost a lot of weight.
Fortunately, a tummy tuck performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon can improve all of these issues in the abdomen. But Dr. Raj says that not every patient needs a full tummy tuck.
“A mini tummy tuck can be a good choice if you have loose skin only under the belly button. The mini procedure is preferable, if possible because it uses a smaller incision and takes less recovery time.”
Of course, any tummy tuck is major surgery, and downtime and recovery are extensive.
You can tell if you need a full or mini tummy tuck by checking your abdomen in the mirror. If you have loose skin above the belly button, you probably need a full tummy tuck. It’s important to do the correct tummy tuck procedure according to your needs, or you won’t achieve ideal results.
Remember To Plan For Recovery
Last, Dr. Raj says that a mommy makeover can make significant changes to how a woman’s body looks, and give them more vitality, energy, and self-confidence. But it is a major surgical procedure, and you’ll need several weeks of downtime and recovery for the best results.
Just make sure, he says, to have a friend or relative available to help you for a while after a mommy makeover, especially if you have small children. As long as you do that, he concludes, you should have an outstanding outcome and the body you’ve been wishing for.
