VIBE: Luby’s has been a tradition among generations of Texas families. For years, it was one of the few restaurants to cater to families with children, and it continues to be one of the best places to dine out with kids. Those of us who grew up here fondly remember our first Luby’s lime Jell-O or macaroni and cheese. Luby’s is an excellent choice when no one can agree on a single cuisine for dinner, since the incredible variety of offerings will tempt the pickiest eater and satisfy everyone’s dietary preferences.
WHY IT'S TOT-FRIENDLY: Luby’s offers kids' meals with one or two sides, so you can order according to your little one’s appetite. This restaurant covers all the family-friendly basics: Cafeteria-style service means you get your food quickly. Highchairs come equipped with trays and wheels so you can roll your tot through the cafeteria line. The staff is friendly and helpful. Changing tables are available in the restrooms.
BE SURE TO TRY: Luby’s food is so popular that they offer their own cookbook, so be prepared to loosen your belt. Perennial favorites include the fried fish, bacon and cheese steak, macaroni and cheese and the yeast rolls. Try out lighter choices such as lemon pepper salmon. Be sure to save room for dessert — Luby’s is justifiably known for its selection of pies.
GOOD TO KNOW: Kids can go to Luby’s Web site to join the Birthday Club and download activity sheets. Most Luby’s locations have a Good Food To Go service, where you can order your food over the phone and pick it up on the way home.
BEST TIMES TO GO WITH KIDS: Any time is a great time to go with kids, but kids eat free Wednesdays after 4pm.
