Local Travel: The Great Outdoors

Camping in February? In Texas, it’s definitely possible. And at Grapevine’s The Vineyards Campground and Cabins, about 30 miles from downtown Dallas, it’s fun and kid-friendly too!

Rent one of the comfy one- or two-bedroom cabins for a weekend getaway—you might be surprised to find it stocked with a 27-inch television with cable, a DVD player and a fully furnished kitchen. The campground even offers Wi-Fi so you can bring along your laptop (not that you’ll be getting any work done!).

When you’re not busy enjoying the comfort indoors, you’ll be amazed by the all the fun you can have outdoors. The campground offers a playground for the kids, nature trails, kayaks and more. And budding anglers can cast their lines at Grapevine Lake, which is swimming (literally) with large-mouth bass, crappie, catfish and other fish.

Venture outside of the campgrounds to take a ride on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad, a round-trip locomotive adventure from Grapevine to the Fort Worth Stockyards (1-6:15pm every Friday-Sunday starting Feb. 19; $20 adults; $18 seniors; $10 children ages 3-12).

At the end of the day, have a tasty dinner outside with the picnic table, barbecue grill and fire ring (perfect for s’mores) located outside each cabin. Then catch a lovely sunset over Grapevine Lake while bundled up together on the cabin’s front porch.

The Vineyards is offering special winter rates through this month: Book two nights at a cabin on a Friday-Saturday or Saturday-Sunday for $200.
