Local Travel: A Treat for the Senses

Now that the holiday hustle and bustle is over, treat your kids (and yourself!) to a mini vacation at the luxurious Omni Mandalay Hotel at Las Colinas near Irving’s Lake Carolyn (about 30 minutes from Plano). The hotel offers new Kids’ Sensory Suites, meant to stimulate children’s senses while providing a comfy home away from home.

The suites offer plenty to keep kids occupied: board games, an art table, books and a free Kids Sensation Bar (sort of like a children’s version of a mini bar) with toys and snacks. The senses theme continues with a goody bag provided to each child upon check-in; each bag contains a flashlight for sight, a drum for sound, Twizzlers for taste, a scented bookmark for smell and a disc launcher and canteen for touch. When it’s time for kids to tuck into their colorful twin beds, they’ll flip for the milk and cookies delivered to their room (on the first night of their stay)!

Grownups aren’t left out either. The hotel offers a heated lakeside swimming pool as well as the posh Makara Salon and Spa, where you can treat yourself to a Cactus Pear Moisture Wrap ($110), a Men’s Anti-Aging Face Treatment ($130), a 75-minute deep-tissue massage ($180) and more.
Rooms start at around $135 per night, or you can opt for the bed and breakfast package, which includes a buffet breakfast for two, for around $169 per night. dc
