Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood in North Lewisville sits Leonard L. Woods Park, complete with two playscapes and a swing set—all of which earned a B+ on NorthTexasChild’s Safety Report Card.*
Parents will appreciate the numerous safety features this playground has to offer, including equipment that is in good shape with no rust, broken parts or head entrapments. The equipment sits almost a foot above the ground and is enclosed with plenty of loose fill on the ground to cushion a fall. Children can easily be viewed while playing, allowing mom or dad to sit off to the side in the shade. With two separate playscapes for ages 2-5 and 5-12, the activities are plentiful and include slides, swings, a climbing wall and monkey bars—more than enough to keep a child entertained.
A handful of potential safety hazards did, however, contribute to the B+ rating. Although there are two separate play areas, neither is marked with age recommendations. There are also no guidelines posted advising visitors of appropriate playground behavior. An insufficient number of guardrails on the equipment means parents should exercise caution while children are at play.
This review was distributed to the City of Lewisville Parks and Recreation for further review and/or action.
