Lake Highlands’ Denita Jones Shares Her Neighborhood Faves

an organization to fight racism, restaurants she loves and more

Denita Jones, who lives in Dallas’ Lake Highlands neighborhood, is a mom of five. Her children Diteke, 26, Dionna, 20, Denim, 18, Dakota, 17, and Dallas, 11, inspired Jones to co-create Lake Highland Area Moms Against Racism. “To hear your children say nothing is going to change makes you want to act, especially in the community in which they live,” says Jones. She shares the destinations that help make Lake Highlands the place she wants to call home.

Favorite family restaurant: Pho 95 is hands-down my family’s favorite restaurant. We have been going here every weekend since we moved here. It’s where I take my kids when they have had a rough week or if I need a one-on-one talk with them. 9780 Walnut St., Dallas; 972/644-6995

Best Park: My favorite park is Berkner Park. I have spent many days there waiting for my children to finish practicing at their high school, and the people you encounter are always so welcoming. 1800 E. Spring Valley Road, Richardson; 972/744-4300

Favorite Family Outing: My children and I love to visit Andy’s Frozen Custard. While we enjoy our custard, we just sit in the car and catch up, plan out trip ideas.  It’s relaxing for all of us. 9655 Audelia Road, Dallas; 469/399-7520

Go-To for Date Night: I am not dating, but if you know someone … (Laughs.) I do take myself out without the kids just to unwind. I love the Boiling Crab. It’s simple, good and spicy. 10560 Walnut St., Suite 100, Dallas; 972/272-7086

Self-Care Spot: I love Dallas Nails Spa. It has been the go-to spot for my daughters and me for four years. 9090 Skillman St., Dallas; 469/930-9233

Get Active: We take our dog Snow on walks together in the neighborhood.

Cool Off: We love everything Andy’s Frozen Custard. 9655 Audelia Road, Dallas; 469/399-7520

Give Back: My children and I have always been active, and that didn’t change when we moved to Texas. Here my children actively volunteer with Texas Poor People’s Campaign and Lake Highlands Area Moms Against Racism (LHAMAR). They also help with block walking, as I am precinct chair for [Dallas County Democratic Party] 1038. Texas Poor People’s Campaign, texas@poorpeoplescampaign.org; Lake Highlands Area Moms Against Racism; Dallas County Democratic Party, 1414 N. Washington Ave., Dallas; 214/821-8331. (Editor’s note: Interested in getting involved with the Dallas County Republican Party? 11617 N. Central Expressway, Suite 240, Dallas; 214/369-9555)

What Makes Lake Highlands a Great Place to Raise a Family: The diversity makes it a great place.

How she found her mom friends: I found my initial friends through PTA and have gained many more through LHAMAR.
