Thanks to such high-energy attractions as SeaWorld, Six Flags Fiesta Texas and Splashtown, San Antonio is an ideal getaway for families with active kids and teens, but guests at the Hyatt Hill Country may find it hard to get motivated to leave the hotel’s grounds.
For the kiddos: Supervised, structured fun is on the to-do list at Rowdy’s Camp Hyatt, where happy campers ages 3 to 12 can hunt for real Indian arrowheads, practice arts and crafts or chill out with a game of wet and wild sponge tag.
For tweens and teens: Don’t expect a soothing vibe at The SPAhhhT (say "spot") Youth Spa. Lively Top 40 music plays throughout the brightly hued treatment rooms where guests age 17 and younger can enjoy a mani-pedi, facial or swimsuit-attired body massage (given under the supervision of a parent or guardian). Another sign this is not your mother’s day spa: Caribbean-style hair braids and airbrushed faux tattoos are on the menu. The fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. Guests ages 12 to 16 are invited to party in the Underground, a teen-only hotspot stocked with PS2 gaming stations, poker tables, billiards, darts and other games, as well as filtered Internet access and a “bar” serving snacks and nonalcoholic mocktails.
For moms and dads: For some parental pampering, check out Windflower – The Hill Country Spa, a full-service day spa offering everything from therapeutic massage and salt rubs to body waxing and soak-tastic Texas Tea Baths. Links lovers can get teed off at one of three nine-hole public golf courses designed by nationally acclaimed architectural firm Arthur Hills and Associates. Named one of Golf Magazine's "Top Ten Courses You Can Play," the Hill Country Golf Club was the first in South Texas to offer a computerized yardage system utilizing GPS (global positioning satellite) navigation systems to help golfers measure the distance from their ball to the hole.
For the whole family: Keeping your cool is easy since the Hyatt Hill Country has its own four-acre water playground complete with a sand beach, multiple swimming pools (including a toddler-friendly kiddie pool), a waterfall and two outdoor hot tubs. If that’s not enough, there’s the Ramblin' River, offering an inner tube float along 950 feet of beautifully landscaped waterway.
Did we forget to mention? The resort offers plenty of on-site amenities for go-getters, including a fully equipped health club, three tennis courts, sand volleyball pit, jogging trails, and a shady playground. Nature lovers can borrow a bicycle to do a little exploring or just sit still and watch the birds that gather at this certified Audubon sanctuary. And when the day is done, guests retire to stunningly updated accommodations, thanks to a $13 million renovation that included new mattresses, luxurious 250-thread count bedding and high-speed Internet and Wi-Fi access in every one of the resort’s 500 rooms.
