Hook, Line and Sinker

You don’t need to live in lakeside luxury, or own a bass boat, to comfortably cast your rod and reel in the big D. Put on those baby bucket hats, grab a tiny tackle box and head to one of these five free family fishing events in May for a shot at the next prize-winning perch.

Farmers Branch
For a whole day of outdoor festivities, join Fishin’ Fun at Gussie Field Watterworth Park. Bring or borrow a fishing rod and test your luck in the (stocked) Rawhide Creek. Stick around for kayaking, a zip line and other family activities in the Kid Zone. Ages 16 and younger.

Carrollton

Sign up for this Youth Fishing Event at Josey Ranch Park Pond. Bring your own equipment or borrow rods, reels, bait and tackle when you compete for trophies and prizes. Ages 16 and under.

If you’ve got a tad more experience under your belt (err, waders), join Dallas Fly Fishers at Carrollton Senior Center. Learn to cast, tie basic fishing knots, review equipment, tie flies and more. Ages 5 and older. Registration recommended.

Irving
For a shot at catching a couple channel fish, head to Family Fishing Day at Northwest Park Recreation Center. All ages are welcome, but participants 17 and older must have a fishing license. Concessions will also be available for purchase.
