Holman D. Rhoton Park in Carrollton

Location: 2250 Ridgedale Drive, located in a residential neighborhood just south of Belt Line. It may be difficult to spot the playground through all the trees, so keep an eye out for its bright red and blue hues.

Why it’s noteworthy: Big kids will love the climbing net, crawling tube, double slide and musical pipes. They’ll also love getting to swing and spin with a buddy on the tire swing. If you live in the surrounding neighborhood, this is a great park for kids to burn off some energy. However, the lack of equipment for younger kids may not make this park worth the drive if you live outside the Carrollton area.

Extras: The park has a large pavilion with picnic tables and grills. Bring your basketballs or tennis rackets; there are lighted courts just north of the playground. Trees surround the park providing ample shade for warm spring days.

Safety: There’s a small amount of rust, but it shouldn’t pose a safety problem. There’s only one play structure for ages 5-12. The height of the structure and the climbing equipment is designed for older kids, so little ones may not be able to get safely up and down the structure without mom or dad’s help. This playground scored an A* on the Safety Report Card.

Pluses & minuses:
+ Basketball and tennis courts
+ Plenty of trees and shade
+ Large pavilion

– No play structure for ages 2–5
– No restrooms

Our grade: 3/5 stars
