Playground Review: Finch Park in McKinney

A look at one of Collin County's neighborhood play areas best for playdates, picnics, parties and kids needing to burn off energy

Location: 301 W. Standifer St. in McKinney, less than a mile from Chestnut Square Historic Village. Several parking lots are located next to the playgrounds and sports courts.

Best for: Kids of all ages. The recreational area is the heart of this shaded 32-acre park, featuring separate playgrounds for tykes and big kids. Slides, swings, climbing structures and interactive games will keep little ones busy for hours. Kiddos will also enjoy playing basketball, tennis or sand volleyball on one of several multipurpose sports courts. During warmer months, they can cool off at the adjoining splash pad where vertical jets bubble with the touch of a button.

For your convenience: Sheltered picnic spots, benches, charcoal grills and public restrooms are located a few feet away from the playgrounds. Pavilion reservations are also available.

Safety: The tot playground’s sunken design keeps it semi-enclosed, but kids may not be easily visible to parents sitting at nearby picnic tables. The rubber surfacing is also worse for wear. Additionally, the sports courts are located across park roads from the playgrounds—though there are no hazardous blind spots, kids may have to cross through traffic.
