Eyes Wide Open

Every morning, I wake up refreshed, alert and well rested with nary a trace of under-eye bagginess or even a pesky wrinkle.

OK, maybe not. Between a mischievous 4-year-old, a Hannah-Montana-channeling 5-year-old, a vomiting cat and a full plate of ever-looming work deadlines, I usually carpe my diems by starting off a little less than fabulous. Think purplish under-eye ruts, sallow cheeks and a dazed countenance only cured by a cup of coffee.

Yet, you’d never know it. By the time I walk out of the house to take the kids to school, I look like I’ve clocked eight hours of slumber. See, it’s all in the eyes. As in, treating your peepers to the miracles of modern beauty products.

Beauty and style maven Bobbie Thomas, who recently breezed through Dallas, knows all the eye-opening tricks, and she raves about vibrating mascaras like Lancôme’s Ôscillation ($34 at department stores). For special occasions, she staves off tired raccoon eyes by using false eyelashes. Her fave? Ardell #124 ($3.25 at most beauty supply stores). Cutting them in half and then blending in the lash line with makeup, she says, will keep the look more natural and less heavy.

For me, it all comes down to M&M: moisturizing and makeup. On my nightstand is Oprah-recommended H20 + Eye Oasis Moisture Replenishing Treatment ($24 at ULTA and www.h20plus.com), followed up in the morning with the ultimate No. 1, desert-island-essential for erasing fatigue: Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Éclat ($40 at Sephora and Neiman Marcus). This gold pen is a veritable magic wand, lightening dark circles as if by, well, magic.

And every mom can use a little of that.
