Description

Verdigris Ensemble presents The Velveteen Rabbit: a tender, immersive retelling of the beloved children’s story that surrounds audiences with music, storytelling, and imagination.

Based on the classic book The Velveteen Rabbit, this semi-staged production transforms the choir into the emotional world of the story itself, serving as characters, atmosphere, and inner voice. Through warm harmonies, gentle movement, and evocative projections, the performance explores what it means to love, to belong, and to become “real.”

Conceived and conducted by Sam Brukhman and directed by Emily Ernst, The Velveteen Rabbit is designed as a shared experience for children and adults alike: intimate, playful, and deeply moving. Performances take place May 15–17, 2026 at 5:30pm at the Dallas Children’s Theater.

Directed by Emily Ernst, conceived and conducted by Sam Brukhman, with visuals by Courtney Ware, The Velveteen Rabbit transforms 16 singers into a living environment: shaping the nursery, the seasons, and the inner emotional world of the characters. Created as Verdigris Ensemble’s very first performance and now returning as the final production of Season 9, this work beautifully bridges the past and future as the ensemble approaches its 10th anniversary.

With a 60-minute runtime and three performances at Rosewood Center for Family Arts, this is an experience designed especially for families, one that gently reminds us that love doesn’t demand perfection, and that our wear, our scars, and our care for one another are exactly what make us real.
