Description
On Wednesday, June 19, Opal Lee will lead a 2.5-mile community walk. That distance represents the 2.5 years it took for the news and enforcement of freedom to reach the enslaved people in Texas.
Now a national holiday, Juneteenth celebrates the freedom gained when slavery was abolished all across the country. Unity Unlimited and Ms. Opal continue her walks to educate the nation on the importance of understanding that freedom is for everyone.
Register to walk virtually with Ms. Opal from any location or join our Opal's Walk Live events in a city near you. Join to support her continued mission to support the National Juneteenth Museum and educate the country about freedom and Juneteenth's power to heal America.
Lee is the 97-year-old social activist and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, known as the Grandmother of Juneteenth, who advocated for Juneteenth to become a federally recognized holiday. The National Juneteenth Museum slated to open in Fort Worth in 2026.
