To help bring mental health services to meet the critical needs of underserved children in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the Housson Center, Pediatric Associates of Dallas, and The Thanks-Giving Foundation in conjunction with Parenting for the Present Foundation, present the second annual Mending Minds 5K.

The goal of the event is to raise money to create programs at the schools to facilitate dialogue around mental health and suicide prevention. There will be family-friendly games and food at Smith Park at the end of the course.

Three years ago, Dr. Matthew Housson, founder of The Housson Center, Dr. Early Denison of Pediatric Associates of Dallas and Dr. Andy Stoker, Chief Engagement Officer of the Thanks-Giving Foundation met to discuss the critical need for mental health services in the DFW area. Their collaboration resulted in the creation of the Parenting for the Present podcast, which is geared toward cultivating the mind, body and spirit of children, parents and their families.

The podcast has been very successful and recently the team recognized the need to expand their scope of service and therefore formed Parenting for the Present Foundation. The mission of the foundation is to help create a healthier North Texas by providing mental health and other services to underserved areas in our community.

Suicide rates are rising nationally. According to the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) it is the second leading cause of death for individuals ages 15–34. Surveys indicate that these statistics continue to rise in the wake of the pandemic. Our goal is to foster an open dialogue that will provide constructive tools to ameliorate the symptoms of anxiety and depression that contribute to rising suicide rates.
