Additional Information

Description

The Amon Carter Museum of American Art (the Carter) launches a new event for adults on the autism spectrum, Meet Up at the Museum, which expands the museum’s longstanding Access Programs initiative. The Carter is proud to be among the first art museums in the country to offer this experience for adults on the autism spectrum, an age group that typically does not have as wide an array of programs available to help them.

The event will feature sensory stations set up throughout the museum, guided tours, art making, gallery games, and an artist demonstration. Social schedules will also be available so visitors can map out their visit.

Community partners Kristin Farmer Autism Center (KFAC) and EPIC (Empowering Personal Interactions in the Community), both from the University of North Texas, will have information tables set up in the museum during the event. KFAC provides evidence-based treatment to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and EPIC focuses on providing social opportunities for neurotypical and neurodivergent adults, including those on the autism spectrum.

Both groups employ highly trained and licensed specialists who can deliver best practices for engaging with individuals on the autism spectrum. The Carter has partnered with these groups to create Meet Up at the Museum, which will work to reach this audience in our local community and ensure that they have a chance to connect with others as well as the art in the collection.

This is a free event; registration for Meet Up at the Museum, which is encouraged but not required, is available beginning August 1. Registration for the event is encouraged but not required. For more details and to sign up visit cartermuseum.org/MeetUp21 or call 817/738-1933.

The Carter has a rich history of providing access events to all ages within the community. For more than 5 years, the Carter have offered events for people with low or no vision, sensory needs, and cognitive and/or physical needs through monthly and on-request programs. Meet Up at the Museum is another opportunity for the Carter to connect with adults of all ages on the autism spectrum.
