Description
In honor of Juneteenth, Galleria Dallas is excited to engage the community in new ways this year. The shopping center commissioned a T-shirt design by local artist, Jeremy Biggers, that will be available free of purchase on June 19, 2021.
Biggers is an award-winning creator with the hope of promoting sincere conversations through his artwork. His work is known to mix realism with a design aesthetic in a way that inspires viewers to discover something new about themselves and form a new perspective of the world around them.
Honoring black lives and culture, the T-shirts commemorate June 19, 1865 – the day slaves in Texas first heard the news of President Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation.
Galleria Dallas sourced locally owned Instant Imprints Plano to print 300 shirts featuring the exclusive design. The shirts will be available for visitors at the Guest Reception Center (level 1, center court) while supplies last. The Galleria opens Saturday from 10am to 8pm.
“I wanted my design to echo those memories in the elements that would have been used in the early and mid-90s as a nod to what came before,” Biggers explains. “One of those design elements is from a painting of mine, featuring the iconic raised fist, based on the Tommie Smith and John Carlos protest during the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. While showing reverence for the past, we have to also be mindful of the incredible things that are happening right now in the present and the future.”
