Description
Resist the temptation to sleep in on New Year’s Day and instead enlist your kids to join in the growing tradition of first day hikes, such as this one through Tandy Hills, 160 acres of prairie land east of downtown Fort Worth.
Tandy Hill's 14th annual "Manly Men, Wild Women" New Year's Day Hike is a group hike that's open to all ages, as well as dogs on a leash. Allow 1 to 2 hours for the hike. The trail will be marked in pink ribbons. The hike starts just north of the playground, off the main trail. Look for the MMWW sign on your left just past the trees.
Note: The hike will not include the Broadcast Hill section this year. Instead, hikers will take advantage of the new trail system whenever it follows close to the park perimeter.
Be sure to come prepared with a water bottle, snacks and a trash bag, and to dress for the weather including sturdy shoes or boots. This event will only be canceled if there is rain or icy streets. Look online for updates at the day nears.
To help prepare your kids for what they might see and encounter at the natural area, download a free copy of Tandy Hills' Kids on the Prairie Field Journal. (You can inquire, too, about Friends of Tandy Hills leading hikes and field trips for kids of all ages.)
Certificates of completion suitable for framing will be awarded to all who complete the hike. If you hike separate from the group and would like a signed and official Certificate of completion, send a photo of yourself at a scenic spot of your choosing, with your name and address, to info@tandyhills.org.
