Additional Information

On Friday, October 14, Austin Street Center hosts former First Lady Laura Bush and Barbara Bush at the Hilton Anatole for a conversation about their life of service. The 22nd annual Humble Beginnings Luncheon will help to raise funds and awareness for the crucial role Austin Street Center brings to the city, providing safe shelter and basic needs to Dallas’ most vulnerable population experiencing homelessness.

Mrs. Bush is a leading voice for spreading freedom and promoting human rights across the globe; she pursues her work on global healthcare innovations, and empowering women in emerging democracies through the George W. Bush Institute in Dallas. Barbara Bush is co-founder and Board Chair of Global Health Corps, an organization that mobilizes young leaders to solve the world’s most pressing health issues.

Founded in 1983, Austin Street Center, which recently unveiled a new facility to further its mission, is one of Dallas’ largest emergency shelters. In 2021 alone, Austin Street Center served nearly 1,500 clients, resulting in 350 clients housed, and more than 400 job placements.

As homelessness in Dallas continues to grow at a rapid rate, the organization recently expanded its operations to meet critical needs through a new 60,000-square-foot, 24/7, client-focused homeless shelter and day service center. The new facility will allow the nonprofit to address the needs of more homeless individuals, providing them with a dignified and individualized service model.

This year’s luncheon will celebrate two members of the community for their ongoing commitment to the issue of homelessness, bestowing Mayor Eric Johnson with its Public Service Award and presenting Carolyn Lacy Miller with this year’s Norm Hitzges Distinguished Award.
