Date Night Outfit Inspiration

outfit ideas for all kinds of dates

Let’s be real: Sometimes, we get into a rut. We make the same meals every week, we watch the same shows (hello, fifth re-watch of The Office), we do the same thing with our hair and we wear the same six outfits in our closet. Wouldn’t it be nice to change it up every now and then? After all, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. So if you and your SO have a night out planned and are looking for some date night outfit inspiration, here you go!

FOR A RELAXED NIGHT OUT

Let’s say you’re just going to dinner and a movie, or maybe it’s just dinner at a fairly casual restaurant—put away the leggings. Yes, it’s an easy go-to, but we’re here to change things up, remember? So, hear us out: Put on some pants. Think jeans, chinos, skinny ankle pants—anything along those lines. Gap, Target and J. Crew always have some solid options.

Pair your pants with a fun, bold sweater. We’re loving the cowl and turtleneck trend happening right now—balloon sleeves too. And spring is on the way, so florals aren’t entirely out of the question. We love finding standout sweaters at Nordstrom, Amazon and Francesca’s.

Next, shoes. Some fun booties, mules, pointed toe flats or white tennis shoes will keep things casual but slightly dressed up. The classic Adidas Superstars or these white Nike Court Visions will keep you comfortable and trendy. These brown Clarks booties will also go with practically everything.

But, if you’ve put your outfit together and you feel like it’s still not quite dressy enough, time to add jewelry. If your sweater or top has a pattern, go for a bold earring. If it’s just a solid color, bring on some long or layered necklaces. (Layered necklaces are the thing to do right now.)

Outfit Ideas:

Option 1: Ruffle Neck Blouse | High-Rise Straight Cropped Jeans | Burgundy Jezlin Flat | Bar Layer Necklace
Option 2: Sweetheart Mock Neck Sweater | Olive Skinny Cargo Chino | Cheetah Print Mule | Kendra Scott Gold Maggie Hoop Earrings

FOR AN OUTSIDE DATE

Are you going to enjoy a nice picnic at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden or Dallas Arboretum? Maybe the plan is to attend an outside concert or drive-in movie. Whatever you’re doing outside, you’ll want to make sure you’re dressed appropriately for the temperature and look fashionable at the same time.

This would be a great time to bring out the chic but comfy items from your closet. Those faux leather leggings with a graphic tee or shacket would be a great option. Maybe break out a midi skirt and bodysuit? This would also be the ideal time to try out some comfy slip-on sneakers or combat boots. If it’s warm enough, break out those sandals!

Outfit Ideas:

Option 1: White Square-neck Bodysuit | Garden Party Midi Skirt | Knotted Headband | Lucky Brand Suede Chelsea Boot
Option 2: Butterfly Graphic Tee | Spanx Faux Leather Leggings | Levi’s Denim Jacket | Marc Fisher Combat Bootie

FOR A FANCY EVENING

For this upcoming date night, let’s try to steer clear of that black dress we always wear if we know we’re going out to a nice dinner or swanky event. We fully subscribe to the thought of, If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it—but let’s just try some fresh ideas.

A few of our favorite dressy items we lean toward when we’re not feeling a dress are high-waisted, wide leg pants or a wide leg jumpsuit. It gives the illusion of a flowy skirt but has the comfort of flattering pants. These will also make your legs look nice and long. The pants with a printed blouse and statement heels will definitely cause some head turns.

If you’d rather stick with a dress, try a midi dress if you usually wear a cocktail dress, or vice versa. Midi dresses and skirts are definitely on trend.

Or maybe you tend to stick with solid colors—try a pattern. But it doesn’t have to be one that’s large and bold; it could simply be a pattern created from the texture of the dress (like the Anthropologie dress linked below).

Don’t forget: Tiered maxi dresses are still having their moment in the sun too.

Outfit Ideas:

Option 1: Anthropologie Shimmer Maxi Dress | Multicolor Platform Sandal
Option 2: Floral Asymmetrical Midi Dress | Nude Suede d’Orsay Pumps
Option 3: Navy Floral Smocked Neck Blouse | High-Rise Mauve Satin Trousers | Gold Metallic Pumps
