Odds are if you have been in this country for 10 minutes, you have seen a LIFE coffee table book. The latest effort, LIFE with Mother, feels different. This book manages to show in photographs a primal connection between mothers and their children — from two refugee sisters reuniting with their mother in Sierra Leone to Jacqueline Kennedy splashing in waves with her daughter, Caroline. These pictures illustrate the shared experience of motherhood that surpasses geographical, economic, racial and religious boundaries and are surprisingly heart wrenching.
Though this book would not be considered as part of a genre traditionally thought of as children’s literature, the thought-provoking images make for an interesting read with slightly older children and serve as springboards for broader discussions on the world beyond our doorstep.
