Celebrity Chef: Lisa Garza

Cooking with kids is not a foreign activity for restaurant owner and chef Lisa Garza. The mom of 12-year-old Ian spent her summer directing Suze Restaurant’s children’s cooking camps. The Dallasite, who perhaps is most notable for her stint on The Next Food Network Star, splits her time between Suze’s kitchen and her own gourmet setup at home, where she says she spends lots of time crafting meals with her son.

While Ian prefers steak and “anything off of the grill,” Garza says the duo enjoys whipping up polenta cakes for guests young and old. “Making the polenta is very kid-friendly — from measuring the ingredients to stirring — and they can help cut out the cakes after they set in the baking sheet,” she says. “The recipe can easily be adapted to be gluten-free; just fry up the cakes without coating them with flour.”
