As a former reporter, a native to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and a contributor to DFWChild’s Podcast series, it’s safe to say that Brittany McElroy has her hands on the pulse of not just her current city of Flower Mound but many other areas around the DFW area as well.
While she currently resides in Flower Mound with her husband, Colin, an Arlington native, she was born in Plano and works in Denton as a broadcast journalism professor at the University Texas.
Their family of four just grew by one so they’re simultaneously getting used to life with a newborn and what life looks like now that things are somewhat resuming normalcy.
With three children under 6–Ethan, 5, and Evangeline, 2, and Asher, their newborn–the family stays busy at local restaurants, parks and splash pads. But Brittany and Colin also carve out time for the oh-so-important date night.
Favorite friendly restaurant: Marty B’s in Bartonville is the perfect family-friendly restaurant. We love the food and there’s a large fenced-in outdoor area for the kids to run around and play games. They also have a huge fire pit and sell s’mores kits, which are a big hit with our kids.
Best Local Park: Little Elm Park has great trails to explore and a beach so the kids can get some sand and water time in without us having to travel. We’re so excited for our kids to be old enough to take them kayaking and paddle boarding there.
Family Outings: There’s a donut store and a little park within walking distance. On the weekends, we like to get a long walk in and enjoy our donuts and coffee while the kids play on the park. This was a great place for our kids to burn off energy when everything was shut down last year because of COVID.
Dinner for Two: We go out a lot in Plano, where my parents (our babysitters most of the time) live but my favorite date nights are the Dallas Summer Musicals. We’ve seen some great shows there.
Taking Care of You: While I live in Flower Mound, I work in Denton. Any time I can work from West Oak Coffee Bar on the Denton Square I feel energized. They have a great Chai tea latte. I also love to going to brunch with friends.
Getting Active with the Family: Before I was pregnant with Asher, we loved family bike rides. We have one of those buggy trailers that can carry two kids that my husband attaches to his bike. My hope is my oldest will be comfortable enough riding his own bike by the time our youngest turns one and can ride in the buggy so all five of us can go ride together again.
Cooling Off in the Summertime: The Splash Pad at Heritage Park in Flower Mound is amazing because it’s all covered. I don’t have to worry as much about the kids getting sunburned, and it keeps it a little cooler for me even if I’m not in the water with the kids.
Giving Back: We’re involved at our church, Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church, and my husband has coached t-ball for the baseball league in Flower Mound.
Why Flower Mound is a Great Place to Raise a Family: It’s a family/kid centric area. There are just so many different activities the kids can do around here plus it’s close to so many other great suburbs.
Making Mom Friends: The easiest place I’ve found is at my kids’ activities. Just strike up a conversation with moms sitting next to you. And then instead of saying “let’s get together sometime” because we know that never happens, actually set up a time and date to meet up.
Then, if you do have childcare, I really recommend trying to make occasional plans without the kids. It can be much easier to get to know someone and build a friendship when you don’t have little ones running around the whole time.
