Bigotes

Vibe: Located near Cowboy Stadium on East Abram, Bigote’s has been serving up faithful regulars their Mexican food favorites since the 1980s. Diners don’t come to Bigotes for the ambiance and atmosphere. Wedged between a tire shop and a burger joint, Bigotes is all about the food. Suit and tie-clad office types rub elbows with construction workers to enjoy fresh food at reasonable prices.

Why it's tot-friendly: Neighborhood families swear by the huge portions and kid-friendly offerings like quesadillas and tostadas. Most of the patrons are regulars, and it’s also a favorite after-church destination. The laid-back atmosphere won’t teach your kids about fine dining, but it will teach them the value of a buck.

Be sure to try: The daily special is the restaurant’s most-ordered menu item. Huge platters brim with cheese enchiladas, rice, beans, two tacos and a bean tostada. It’s a lot of food, but many diners do take advantage of the all-you-can eat offer and load up with seconds. At $7.50, the special is a real budget stretcher. (No sharing at this price, but take-home containers are available for those who can’t finish the large portions.)

Good to know: Bigotes opens at 8am for breakfast, and many patrons whiz in for the restaurant’s popular breakfast tacos. The restaurant closes at 4pm.

Best times to go with kids: Bigotes is usually packed during the noon lunch hour, so wait until the lunch crunch is over, and you’ll avoid spending your “quality family time” waiting on a table.
