All Dressed Up

Mom: I keep reading about how popular dresses are for fall. I have a large bust and kind of a thick waist. Is there a dress out there for me?

Nancy: You are in luck! This is the season of the wrap. They are on every rack — from Target to Neiman Marcus. Let’s start with a few guidelines that will help you feel fabulous and pretty.

First, what not to wear: Choked up necklines or anything that is high, shows no skin and covers your entire chest. This will only make you look like you have “Boobs ‘O Plenty.” Halter necks are OK, but strapless is not your friend.

What you should wear: Sweetheart neckline, wrap dress, anything in a lower cut with ruching that brings in your waistline.

Go for a jersey dress, which is almost a year-round fabric. You’ll find a houndstooth knit-jersey (or black wool blend), short-sleeve number with a sweetheart neckline that is practically foolproof at Banana Republic. Pair it (or any dress this season) with an opaque or textured leg, platform pump, tall boot or short bootie.

Also, Steve Madden boasts a chic, short-sleeve taffeta wrap shirtdress in a modern black and navy stripe. What you put on your legs is key to taking this look from good to great. Try Donna Karan’s nude fishnet hose.

Another trick? Log on to Nordstrom.com where you can sort dresses by body shape (pear, apple, hourglass) — it’s almost like having your own personal shopper.
