Alicia Brooks’ Favorite Places for the Family in Hurst-Euless-Bedford

easy restaurants, little libraries and shopping for a cause

Alicia Brooks is the owner of a LuLaRoe boutique, but the title she is most passionate about is mom. Brooks and husband Matthew are parents of two: daughter Vera, 10, and son Simon, 7. Simon has autism, which can pose challenges (he is non-verbal and a runner). For the Brooks family, the pandemic had a silver lining; it created an opportunity to enjoy some outings without the crowds.

Favorite Family Restaurant: Spring Creek Barbeque is our favorite restaurant. The kids love the food, and we especially love not having to wait for it to be ready. We like to go during non-popular times. For our weekly drive-thru outing, Chick-fil-A always wins! Spring Creek Barbeque, 1509 Airport Freeway, Bedford; 817/545-0184; Chick-fil-A, 767 Grapevine Highway, Hurst; 817/485-3337

Best Park: Chisholm Park in Hurst is our closest favorite park. The kids love the playground but also get excited to see the ducks at the pond. 2200 Norwood Drive, Hurst; 817/788-7220

Favorite Family Outing: We love to go to Dave & Buster’s as a family. The kids love playing all the games. 2525 Rio Grande Blvd., Euless; 817/786-1600

Go-To for Going Out: Years ago, my husband and I replaced counseling with dating! Being special needs parents is hard. We cherish our respite time together so much. We really love exploring local coffee shops, arcades, food trucks and all kinds of adventurous new foods. Our favorite repeats are Napa Thai or Jason’s Deli. Napa Thai, 5005 Colleyville Blvd., Suite 240, Colleyville; 682/325-4588; Jason’s Deli, 2200 Airport Freeway, Bedford; 817/354-1511

Self-Care Spot: Like most moms, I don’t do much self-care—but if driving through HTeaO counts, it’s definitely a nice guilt-free treat. For some true self-care, I recommend Dawn Coop at Simply Smooth Skin Therapy. HTeaO, 2128 Harwood Road, Bedford; 682/292-7555; Simply Smooth Skin Therapy, 1101-A Bedford Road, Bedford; 817/907-1582

Where They Get Active: We love to walk the trail from our house to the Bedford Bark Park. The kids love seeing the dogs! 3200 Meadow Park Drive, Bedford; 817/952-2329

For Cooling Off: We absolutely can’t wait for the new water features at Generations Park, but until then we will be spending lots of time at Chisholm Aquatics Center or Parr Park’s splash pad. Generations Park at Boys Ranch (project completion date in 2022), 2801 Forest Ridge Drive, Bedford; 817/952-2329; Chisholm Aquatics Center, 2200 Norwood Drive, Hurst; 817/788-7250; Parr Park, 3010 Parr Lane, Grapevine; 817/410-3450

How She Gives Back: My LuLaRoe online shop provides for my son’s autism, speech & occupational therapies. When we can, we do Fashion FUNdraisers to help others in need. As I work to help my son overcome his challenges, I hope that his story inspires others. There is always hope.

Why Hurst-Euless-Bedford is Great for Families: We love that HEB values the arts and reading. We frequent the Little Free Library locations in the neighborhood, and my daughter loves art lessons at Art Castle. The schools have been very supportive of our son’s unique needs as well. Little Free Library; Art Castle, 475 W. Harwood Road, Hurst; 817/285-9800

How She Met Her Mom Friends: I’ve been blessed to meet many local moms through my boutique business. These ladies have rallied around me and encouraged me as I work to provide therapies for my son. We open our shop for in-person shopping almost every weekend, and I love to help all our customers. I especially cherish the local autism moms I meet online and the fellow moms in my daughter’s Girl Scout troop.
