Why Meredith Shanks Loves The Colony

there's a lot going on in this neighborhood

By profession, Meredith Shanks is a freelancer in marketing and communications; by passion, she loves being in the kitchen. (As it’s gotten warmer, she’s enjoyed playing around with burger recipes—the favorite so far is an apple cheddar burger.) The East Texas native lives in The Colony with her husband Sterling, who is a student pastor, and their two foster daughters.

Favorite family restaurant We love Heritage Pizza. The pizza is really good, and they have a playground outside so kids can get out their energy. They also always run some amazing deals.

Best park We’ve recently discovered Stewart Creek Park. We love going there with friends because there is so much to do—playgrounds, nature trails, and we let the kids play in the sand and water.

Favorite family outing Our family really enjoys picnics when the weather is nice. We will pick up food at a local restaurant, picnic and let the girls ride their bikes. It’s been one of our favorite evening activities.

For a night out I love Mi Cocina in the Grandscape area! I will go with my husband or friendswhoever is up for some Sunset Fajitas with me. The Truck Yard in Grandscape is also a fun choice.

Self-care spot We live fairly close to some trails and Bill Allen Memorial Park, and when I need some time for myself, you will often find me on a walk or run.

Go-to for getting active I’ve been missing my gym so much during this season, but Texas Family Fitness is where I go, and my girls love their Kids Club. I’ve only ever used the equipment, but I’ve been wanting to try out some of their classes.

For cooling off  Hawaiian Falls is right down the road. We’re looking at possibly getting season passes.

How they give back We are very involved in our church, First Baptist Church at The Fields. Sterling is the student pastor, and I help in our MOPS group.

How she found her mom squad I adore my mom squad! When I became a foster mom, I felt incredibly lonely. I didn’t have any other mom friends, but I got involved in the MOPS group at First Baptist Church at The Fields, and I have found the dearest friends. We meet up for playdates and girls nights all the time. I’m so thankful for them.

Why The Colony is great for families I love how The Colony feels like a small town, but it has access to big city attractions too.
